Beaches and Hotels of Koh Mak

Like its bigger neighbor of Koh Chang, the beaches of Koh Mak are safe, have that unique soft white sand, and line the coastline of as good proportion of the island.  Some areas are quite rocky and less suitable for swimming but are great places for snorkeling.

The waters are as clear as clear can be, making coral growth here outstanding. Swimming in these waters is a delight and is enjoyed by families from within the country and overseas. Since Koh Mak has kept its main industry of rubber and coconuts, the concentration of development, which is not at all intrusive, has been on the southern and western sides of the islands. This is also where he better beaches are.

On the south west side of Koh Mak is Ao Nid which has a pier for the boat to Trat . Around the headland at Ao Kao is the location for a group of hotels, which are generally built to blend with the environment, rather than compete with it.  Most are made in the form of a beach hut with thatched roofs. This is another point for a ferry to Trat. Ao Kao is regarded as  the best place for swimming on Mak.

On the north western side there is the glorious Ao Suan Yai, which facing west has the best of the sunsets. The beach here is long with that perfect sand and clear water everyone craves for. It’s the location for two of the best hotels on the island at Cococape Resort and Koh Mak resort.  This another location for a ferry to Trat, as well as one to Koh Chang

The north side of the island is largely rubber plantations and coconut trees. There is almost no development here, in an area which has a rocky coastline. There is one, small lodging at Green View resort, nestled amongst the rubber plantations and somewhat remote, it is on cycle route B3.  Nearby on the tip of the eastern side is the Little Moon. A simple lifestyle here, well away from whatever crowds there may be and light years away from the big city stress.
