The Weather on Koh Mak

The island of Koh Mook (sometimes also called Muk) lies off the west coast of southern Thailand, and like all the islands in this magnificent Phang Nga Marine National Park is subject to big seasonal climate changes. During the dry months of November through to May, the area is calm, warm to hot, and dry. The boats from the mainland near Trang and from Lanta bring visitors to see the Emerald Cave and the fantastic beaches.

But, come the rainy season all this changes. It is not so much a case of bad weather on the island – there are plenty of sunny days in the low season from May to November. The problem lies in the monsoon winds, plus the rain, making a boat journey to the islands quite hazardous. The day can be calm and apart from the high humidity, you would never know it was the rainy season, but quite suddenly, the winds can increase and within an hour there is a monumental downpour.

These downpours might only last for one hour, but that’s the time you don’t want to be out on a boat in rough seas. Any local will offer advice on this, and if a longtail boatman tells you it is not going to be possible to reach Koh Mook, take the advice – he will know best.

So, the best time to visit Koh Mook is from November to May when there is guaranteed sunshine and calm seas.
