When to go to Koh Mak

The Gulf of Thailand does not suffer so much from the rough seas found in the Andaman  resorts of  Lanta, Phi Phi and the smaller islands of that region. Ferries continue to run throughout the year, whilst on the western side of Thailand, boat services are often suspended or cancelled completely for the period from May to November.

But  on these islands, the ferry from Trat runs all year, unless of course here is a serious storm. The low season is from May to October, when gradually as the months pass into July and August, it becomes hotter and more humid. It rains but mainly in short bursts, so its not really a problem.

There will be some major thunderstorms which will rock you off your seat as the loudest bang goes off seemingly just above your head. Followed by bright flashes of lightening, these low season storms are both spectacular and sometimes quite scary.

The electricity may go off but then come back on, during a storm. Then as quickly as a storm arrived it moves on, and all returns to normal. If this happens during daytime hours then make for a nice bar for a break from the beach, and wait until the rain finishes.

In the high season of November though to April, the weather is simply beautiful. Its cooler, by Thai standards, and whilst Europeans are delighting in temperatures of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, it is not unusual for local people to be talking about the ‘cold’ weather.  Try Norway in February – now that is cold!

So the best time for a visit is November to April, but don’t be put off by the low season tag – the weather will not be so bad and the prices are lower, with fewer people around.
